The University of Texas at Austin

For your transfer application to be complete, the following items must arrive in the Office of Admissions on or before the deadline.

» Summer / Fall Deadline: March 1

» Spring Deadline: October 1

Hurricane Ike

The University of Texas at Austin continues to monitor conditions resulting from the aftermath of Hurricane Ike and will assess and address the concerns of prospective students as they arise. Individual students who are concerned about how the storm’s aftermath may affect their application for admission for the Spring 2009 semester (and beyond, if necessary) should contact the Office of Admissions at 512-475-7387.

If the list of application requirements doesn’t include items you were planning to submit, you may want to review the list of items we don’t require.

Application Requirements

Application

  • Submit your completed ApplyTexas Application online or use the paper application. The online summer/fall application opens on September 1.
  • Applicants who select both a first- and second-choice major are initially considered for admission to their first-choice major; those not admitted to their first-choice are then considered for admission to their second choice.

Non-refundable $60 application processing fee

  • Online payment preferred; pay by credit card (MasterCard or Visa) if paid while applying online.
  • If you are unable to pay your fees because of financial need, request a fee exemption.

Major-specific Items

Resume (recommended item)

  • You are encouraged to submit an expanded resume of information about academic, community, and work activities; include details that attest to your skills, abilities, experiences and background beyond those listed on your application.
  • Mail or fax (512-475-7478) your resume to us, or use the UT Resume Submission system to submit your resume online.

Optional item

  • Letters of recommendation: If you submit one or more letters of recommendation that attest to your qualifications, the letter(s) will be considered when an admission decision is made.

Additional Requirements for Some Applicants

Residency affidavit (for international Texas residents)

If you qualify for Texas residency (under HB 1403), you must submit a complete copy of the Residency Affidavit.

Generally, international students who lived and went to high school in Texas may qualify for Texas residency if they:

  • Graduated from a Texas high school or received a GED
  • Resided in Texas for the 36 months immediately preceding graduation from a Texas high school or receipt of the GED
  • Resided in Texas for the 12 months preceding the census date of the academic semester in which they enrolled in an institution of higher education
  • Sign an affidavit stating that they meet the above qualifications and will apply for permanent residency upon first availability to do so

Review the information on the Residency site for details, and talk to a residency officer to work out any issues you might have.

Permanent resident card

If you hold a permanent resident visa, you must submit a photocopy of the front of your permanent resident card or temporary evidence of your I-551 in your passport before an admission decision will be made.

TOEFL or IELTS

Unless you have undertaken a significant amount of your college coursework in a country that is an English-speaking country, you may be required to submit a score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

A transfer applicant who meets any of the following conditions is usually exempted from this requirement:

  • Earned three years of United States high school English credit, excluding ESL courses.
  • Resided in the United States for ten years or more.
  • Earned a bachelor's degree at a United States institution of higher education.
  • Attended a United States institution of higher education immediately prior to enrollment at UT Austin.
  • Graduated from a United States high school.

During the application review process, applicants who appear to have an English deficiency will be notified and given specific instructions about the ways they can satisfy the deficiency. Although applicants are not required to satisfy this deficiency by the application deadline, their admission decision will not be rendered until the deficiency is satisfied.

TSI Exam (formerly TASP)

The Texas Success Initiative (formerly TASP) may require you to take an assessment test (usually the THEA) before enrolling in courses; many students are exempt.

Required for Enrollment

Before enrolling at the university, admitted transfer students must submit an official high school transcript. The information on your high school transcript will be used for placement purposes. Although it isn’t required for admission, you are encouraged to submit it with your other admissions credentials by the application deadline.

Institution Code

When applying for admission, transfer applicants must indicate the UT Austin code for the institution from which they are transferring (2007-2008 – UT Austin Inst Codes – 91K PDF). In addition, applicants who are Texas residents are required to indicate the county in which they claim residency (Texas County Codes – 69K PDF).

Submitting Application Items

Credentials required as part of the application process may not be submitted by e-mail. This includes essays, permanent resident card information, resumes, letters of recommendation and fee payment waiver information. These, and any other application related items, submitted by e-mail will be discarded.

Sometimes transfer applicants are surprised to learn that certain items aren’t required or considered as part of their application for admission, including:

Items Not Required

  • SAT I/ACT scores: Entrance exam scores are not required for transfer applicants. We use other indicators, such as an applicant’s success in transferable coursework, to indicate academic strength.
  • High school rank or grades: Your high school rank and/or grades are not considered when we make transfer decisions. If you’re admitted, however, we will need a high school transcript to determine which courses you should or should not be placed in at UT Austin.
  • SAT II scores: Although you may want to submit SAT II scores to us if you’re eligible for college credit based on your scores, they are not considered when we make admissions decisions.

Fee Exemptions

We sometimes grant fee exemptions to students with high financial need. If you would like to request a fee exemption, mail or fax one of the following to the Office of Admissions:

  • A copy of the financial aid award letter received from your current institution
  • A copy of your current financial aid transcript
  • Copies of your income tax returns from the past two years

Application Deadlines

Your complete application and all required documents must be in the Office of Admissions on the day of the deadline. (Mailing them or postmarking them by the deadline doesn’t count.)

You may submit your application as much as a year before the semester in which you’d like to enroll. The earlier you submit it, the more time you’ll have to make sure it’s complete before the deadline.

After You Apply

After you submit all the items required to complete your application for transfer admission, you should continue to check your admission status and other processes as you wait to hear about your admissions decision.
