Seeing My Potential

I decided to attend The University of Texas because of its size and history. It was quite a risk, though, as I had never even been to Austin. I remember the first time I walked up the South Mall towards the Main Building and Tower. When I looked up at the Tower, it was then that I could see my potential at the university and in life. The experience is the same every time I walk past the Tower. Every time I look up there, I realize that I have found my place. I can now say that choosing to come to UT Austin is the greatest choice I've ever made.

Making Connections

I truly thought that getting to know people here was going to be difficult. Luckily, I've been able to get involved with a number of programs, like Connexus, that put me in direct contact with faculty and other students who have similar interests. As a result, I've made more friends than I ever thought possible. We've become each other's support, and we push each other to succeed.

Jester Jubilee

My friend was a part of a band back home and now that he's here, he wanted a way to express his musical ability. On the week of 16 de septiembre we went around the rooms of our friends who live in Jester and serenaded them with the only mariachi song we knew, Cancion del Mariachi by Antonio Banderas. We ended up sitting in some chairs outside of the lobby where everyone came into the dorm. We played the guitar and sang everything from Alanis Morrissette to Weezer. Quite a few people came and joined in on our spectacle and it really put the vastness of Jester into perspective; that everyone likes music.

Enrique's advice on…

Studying in college

Study, read and review your notes as you go. That way, when the test rolls around all you'll need to do is review material you're already familiar with. If you wait until the week of your test to read and study, you'll have weeks and weeks worth of notes to go through.

Making friends

Be open to different people. There are so many different people just waiting for you to introduce yourself. Remember to get out of your dorm room. There is another world outside the four walls of your dorm room.

Getting around campus

Be prepared to walk. Walking never hurt anyone—plus you get to see and speak with people on the way to class.

Looking ahead

I look forward to completing my undergraduate education here at UT Austin and continuing on to graduate school while working to establish myself as an editor for a magazine or newspaper.

Favorites

  • Class: My RTF (Radio-Television-Film) 305 class (Introduction to Media Studies) with Carolyn Cunningham. Even though it was a large class of a few hundred people, she made a point of memorizing everyone's name.
  • Books: 1984 by George Orwell and Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad
  • Movies: Superman and X-Men
  • Thing about Austin: The people. The people in Austin and the ideas they bring to the city truly create a unique environment that enhances the learning experience here.
  • Favorite study locations off campus: Magic Wok or Jason's Deli
  • Fill in the blank: I can’t _____ without _____.
Answer: I can’t reach for the stars without an inspiration.
