The University of Texas at Austin

Beginning in mid-July building and room assignments are mailed to students whose contracts and advance payments for the fall semester have arrived. Your room assignment will include:

  • The residence hall to which you’ve been assigned
  • Your room number and bath type
  • The name, home telephone number and e-mail address of your roommate

When you receive your room assignment, you’ll also receive detailed information about living on campus, including check-in information – when you’ll be able to move into your room and the process that you’ll go through to move in. Once you receive your room assignment, you’ll have to schedule a check in time.

Residence Hall Opening

Residence halls open for the fall semester in late August, usually the weekend before classes begin.

How Room Assignments Are Made

Room assignments are made based on the date on which a housing application is complete; housing applications are complete only after the $50 housing application fee has arrived.

Applicants who applied early are more likely to receive the buildings and bathroom types they requested. For example, applicants who apply early are more likely to be assigned the residence hall or bathroom preference they request.

However, that doesn’t mean that applicants who apply late aren’t able to live on campus or to find a suitable accommodation. Even students who wait to apply for housing after being admitted have been offered space in on-campus housing in recent years. (That doesn’t mean, however, that it’s a good idea to wait to apply; applying as soon as you complete your application for admission is still the best advice.)
